About

A documentary theater piece that immerses us in the history of wrestling in Quebec. *Si Dieu le veut* takes us back to a not-so-distant era when, in Quebec, Sunday mornings were marked by two major rituals: Mass… and wrestling! This documentary theater piece by Stéphane E. Roy explores these two passions, which, each in its own way, have shaped Quebec’s cultural and social fabric, as well as the unexpected connections that link them. Through his memories and research, Stéphane E. Roy attempts to understand the fascinating relationship his grandmother Marie-Ange—a pious and dignified woman—had with wrestling. As soon as Mad Dog Vachon appeared on screen, this gentle woman would transform into a monster of vengeance. This paradox serves as the starting point for a broader reflection on the Québec of the past—a time, in the midst of the Quiet Revolution, when the province was searching for heroes, local heroes who embodied a people seeking emancipation. Surrounded by Father Francoeur (Martin Larocque) and her grandmother Marie-Ange (Amélie Grenier), Stéphane E Roy takes us on a journey exploring how our beliefs and rituals shaped an era in which religion and wrestling were intertwined. An extraordinary play that seeks to capture the reasons why Quebec identified with these iconic figures of the ring and to determine whether this era is linked, in one way or another, to the emancipation of its people. We delve into our memories to relive a time when all it took was belief to experience extraordinary moments. And as the legendary wrestling figure Édouard Carpentier used to say: “See you next week… God willing!”
